Heidelberg Retinal Tomography (HRT) - 2008-02-13

Heidelberg Retinal Tomography (HRT)

The HRT is a sophisticated laser that can take 3-dimensional photographs of the optic nerve and surrounding retina. This laser camera can take up to 32 layer-by-layer pictures of the surface of the optic nerve up to a depth of 4mm.

The HRT images can be used to compute the area, volume and the rim around the optic cup. These measurements can then be used in 2 ways:

  1. To aid the detection of Glaucoma even before any visual loss.
  2. To aid the detection of Glaucomatous progression.

Patients may find this technique useful when:

  1. Screening for Glaucoma for those considered to be at risk
  2. Objective assessment, ideal for those who have poor or difficult to interpret Visual Filed Plots.
  3. Screening for those who have high Intra-ocular Pressures.
  4. Differentiation between physiological and pathological cupping
